One of the beauties of living in the Boulder, Colorado area is having the ability to take advantage of the Boulder tech. scene. Last Monday, I attended an event hosted by Silicon Flatirons, the CU interdisciplinary telecommunications program, and the Atlas Institute call Entrepreneurs Unplugged. The speakers for the event was Greg Maffei and Michael Zeisser of Liberty Media Corporation, with Brad Feld of the Foundry Group and Brad Bernthal of Silicon Flatirons moderating. In the short hour that they had, Greg and Michael described the types of e-commerce companies that they acquire and the successes that Liberty Media has experienced. Some of the companies that Liberty Media invests in include DirecTV, Staz, Sirius XM, Expedia, and of course, the Atlanta Braves. Key sound bytes were:
“Chain Love is a road bike company, so don’t get your hopes up.”
“You’re not a real man till you have lost 500 million on paper.”
It was a great evening, with lots of brianiac smart people in the crowd. Brad Feld was his usual self – original, confident, and quick to think. Brad also shamelessy promoted David Cohen and his new book, “Do More Faster.”
Great job guys!
