The Colorado Department of Health and Environment (CDPHE) has revised its compliance bulletin on pharmaceutical waste disposal. Specifically, due to the disposal requirements under Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) for scheduled drugs, if a pharmaceutical is both regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and DEA and the only disposal option is through the reverse distributer, this practice may continue (chlorohydrate is an example). This compliance bulletin should be of interest to environmental, health and safety professionals in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries. There are a few potent compounds that are RCRA listed hazardous wastes.
